A flaw was found in RPC request using gfs2_create_req in glusterfs server. An authenticated attacker could use this flaw to create arbitrary files and execute arbitrary code on glusterfs server nodes.
The bug was discovered 02/03/2018. The weakness was presented 09/04/2018 by Michael Hanselmann as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-10929 since 05/09/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 213 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117317 (RHEL 7 : Gluster Storage (RHSA-2018:2607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 256518 (CentOS Security Update for glusterfs (CESA-2018:2607)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
