A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 17.9/18.0 Preview 4 (Database Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component XMLA File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. The bug was discovered 10/09/2018. The weakness was disclosed 10/09/2018 by John Page (hyp3rlinx) as confirmed security update guide (Website). This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-8532 since 03/14/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. An information disclosure vulnerability exists in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) when parsing a malicious XMLA file containing a reference to an external entity. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could read arbitrary files via an XML external entity declaration.
