net-snmp 5.7.3 PERL newSVpv Community String input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in net-snmp 5.7.3 (Network Management Software). Affected is the function newSVpv of the component PERL Handler. The manipulation as part of a Community String leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The perl_trapd_handler function in perl/TrapReceiver/TrapReceiver.xs in Net-SNMP 5.7.3.pre3 and earlier, when using certain Perl versions, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (snmptrapd crash) via an empty community string in an SNMP trap, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference within the newSVpv function in Perl.

The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2014 as CVE request for two net-snmp remote DoS flaws as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-2285 since 03/05/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73163 (CentOS 5 : net-snmp (CESA-2014:0322)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123075 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 5.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 5.7.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at net-snmp.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91634), Tenable (73163), SecurityFocus (BID 65968†), Secunia (SA57526†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1029950†). The entries VDB-11686, VDB-67226, VDB-67230 and VDB-69739 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
