The OpenVPN module in Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) 4.3-3810 update 1 has a hardcoded root password of synopass, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access via a VPN session.
The weakness was shared 02/27/2014 by tesla563 as [security] [critical] default root:synopass gets VPN access as confirmed posting (Forum). It is possible to read the advisory at forum.synology.com. The posting contains:
However, when enabling the VPN server, root:synopass will get you authenticated and connected! User 'root' does not appear under the users that may get VPN access (VPN server > Privilege) and, again, there doesn't seem to be a way to change the root password or disable that user from connecting to the VPN.This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-2264 since 03/02/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
