A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10/11 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code of the component VBScript Scripting Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The bug was discovered 11/13/2018. The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2018 by Ivan Fratric with Google Project Zero as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared for download at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-8552 since 03/14/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

An information disclosure vulnerability exists when VBScript improperly discloses the contents of its memory, which could provide an attacker with information to further compromise the user’s computer or data.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118916 (KB4467691: Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 November 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100346 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Update for November 2018).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (118916) and Exploit-DB (45924). The entries 126704, 126705, 126707 and 126708 are pretty similar.
