Wireshark up to 2.6.4 PVFS Dissector packet-pvfs2.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.6.4 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-pvfs2.c of the component PVFS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.4 and 2.4.0 to 2.4.10, the PVFS dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-pvfs2.c by preventing a NULL pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 11/27/2018. The weakness was published 11/29/2018 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-19624 since 11/28/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
