HP Integrated Lights-Out 2/3/4 IPMI Protocol credentials management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in HP Integrated Lights-Out 2/3/4 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component IPMI Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-255. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The IPMI 2.0 specification supports RMCP+ Authenticated Key-Exchange Protocol (RAKP) authentication, which allows remote attackers to obtain password hashes and conduct offline password guessing attacks by obtaining the HMAC from a RAKP message 2 response from a BMC.

The weakness was released 03/13/2014 by Dan Farmer as SSRT101367 / c04197764 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at h20565.www2.hp.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4786 since 07/08/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1552. The advisory points out:

There is no resolution to this issue. The authentication process for the IPMI 2.0 specification mandates that the server send a salted SHA1 or MD5 hash of the requested user's password to the client, prior to the client authenticating. The BMC returns the password hash for any valid user account requested. This password hash can be broken using an offline brute force or dictionary attack. Because this functionality is a key part of the IPMI 2.0 specification, there is no way to fix the problem without deviating from the IPMI 2.0 specification.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80101 (IPMI v2.0 Password Hash Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43393 (IPMI 2.0 RAKP Authentication Remote Password Hash Retrieval Vulnerability).

It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable IPMI. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85567) and Tenable (80101). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 64655, 78153, 82623 and 82615.
