. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A race condition in the way env_start and env_end pointers are initialized in the execve system call and used in fs/proc/base.c on Linux 2.4 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash).
The bug was discovered 07/21/2003. The weakness was presented 06/26/2003 by Paul Starzetz with iSEC Security Research as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0462 since 06/26/2003. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12410 (RHEL 2.1 : kernel (RHSA-2003:239)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
