A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function bc_svc_process
of the component NFS41+ Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel in the NFS41+ subsystem. NFS41+ shares mounted in different network namespaces at the same time can make bc_svc_process() use wrong back-channel id and cause a use-after-free. Thus a malicious container user can cause a host kernel memory corruption and a system panic. Due to the nature of the flaw, privilege escalation cannot be fully ruled out.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2018. The weakness was shared 12/18/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-16884 since 09/11/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121104 (Virtuozzo 7 : readykernel-patch (VZA-2018-089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Virtuozzo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171998 (OpenSUSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2019:0065-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
