Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.2 Window Server access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.2 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component Window Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

WindowServer in Apple OS X through 10.9.2 does not prevent session creation by a sandboxed application, which allows attackers to bypass the sandbox protection mechanism and execute arbitrary code via a crafted application.

The weakness was released 04/22/2014 by Antoine Delignat-Lavaud with KeenTeam as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1314 since 01/08/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Maliciously crafted applications can execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73648 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2014-002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).

Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

To prevent attacks based on this scenario, Secure Transport was changed so that, by default, a renegotiation must present the same server certificate as was presented in the original connection. This issue does not affect Mac OS X 10.7 systems and earlier.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92704), Tenable (73648), SecurityFocus (BID 67026†), Secunia (SA58081†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030133†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-10903, VDB-13040, VDB-13039 and VDB-13038.
