A vulnerability has been found in HP Integrated Lights-Out up to 2.24 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component SSL Handler. The manipulation as part of a Heartbleed Check leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The server in HP Integrated Lights-Out 2 (aka iLO 2) 2.23 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via crafted HTTPS traffic, as demonstrated by traffic from a CVE-2014-0160 vulnerability-assessment tool.
The weakness was disclosed 04/23/2014 as c04249852 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at h20565.www2.hp.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2601 since 03/24/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
However, the first-generation iLO and iLO 2 products use the RSA SSL libraries and there is a bug in these libraries that will cause first-generation iLO and iLO 2 devices to enter a live lockup situation when a vulnerability scanner runs to check for the Heartbleed vulnerability.
A public exploit has been developed by Jared Stafford in Python and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73918 (HP iLO 2 <= 2.23 DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 2.25 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at h20565.www2.hp.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92744), Tenable (73918) and Exploit-DB (32745). The entry 12819 is pretty similar.
