The bbcode plugin in TinyMCE 3.5.8 does not properly enforce the TinyMCE security policy for the (1) encoding directive and (2) valid_elements attribute, which allows attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via application-specific vectors, as demonstrated using a textarea element.
The weakness was presented 03/05/2013 by Alex as File 120750 (Packetstorm). The advisory is available at packetstormsecurity.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4230 since 08/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80141 (Fedora 20 : sagemath-6.1.1-6.fc20 (2014-16667)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
