A vulnerability in the hxterm service of Cisco HyperFlex Software could allow an unauthenticated, local attacker to gain root access to all nodes in the cluster. The vulnerability is due to insufficient authentication controls. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by connecting to the hxterm service as a non-privileged, local user. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to gain root access to all member nodes of the HyperFlex cluster. This vulnerability affects Cisco HyperFlex Software Releases prior to 3.5(2a).
The bug was discovered 02/20/2019. The weakness was released 02/21/2019 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20190220-chn-root-acc as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-1664 since 12/06/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13431 (Cisco HyperFlex Multiple Vulnerabilities(cisco-sa-20190220-chn-root-access,cisco-sa-20190220-hyperflex-injection)).
Upgrading to version 3.5(2a) eliminates this vulnerability.
