When mount.ecrpytfs_private before version 87-0ubuntu1.2 calls setreuid() it doesn't also set the effective group id. So when it creates the new version, mtab.tmp, it's created with the group id of the user running mount.ecryptfs_private.

The bug was discovered 08/23/2011. The weakness was released 04/22/2019 by Dan Rosenberg. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3145 since 08/16/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119656 (CentOS Security Update for eCryptfs (CESA-2011:1241)).

Upgrading to version 87-0ubuntu1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
