Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 on ARM Virtual Address access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 on ARM (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Virtual Address Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Xen 4.4.x, when running on an ARM system, does not properly check write permissions on virtual addresses, which allows local guest administrators to gain privileges via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 06/04/2014 by Julien Grall as XSA-98 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xenproject.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux Foundation. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3969 since 06/04/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

A guest running on a vulnerable system is able to write to memory which should be read-only. This includes supposedly read only foreign mappings established using the grant table mechanism. Such read-only mappings are commonly used as part of the paravirtualised I/O drivers (such as guest disk write and network transmit).

Applying the patch xsa98-4.4-01.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (93626).
