A vulnerability was found in Rapid7 Insight Agent 2.6.3.14. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/22/2019. The weakness was released 06/03/2019 by Florian Bogner as Rapid7’s Windows InsightIDR Agent: Local Privilege Escalation as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-5629 since 01/07/2019. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
While trying to disable the InsightIDR Agent during one of my assignments (so that I could stay under the radar), I discovered a privilege escalation vulnerability in its Windows service. This vulnerability could be abused by any local user to gain full control over the affected system.
A public exploit has been developed by Florian Bogner and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at bogner.sh. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The advisory illustrates:
The underlying vulnerability was that the ir_agent Windows Service, which is automatically started on system boot and runs with SYSTEM privileges, tries to load the DLL C:\DLLs\python3.dll. This causes a local privilege escalation from authenticated user to SYSTEM.
Upgrading to version 2.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
