memory leak in simple network management protocol (snmp) agent (snmp.exe) for windows nt 4.0 before service pack 4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of snmp packets with object identifiers (oids) that cannot be decoded.

The weakness was disclosed 12/23/1997 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at support.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-1999-1581 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 2000 eliminates this vulnerability.
