PolarSSL 1.1.1 DH RSA Key inadequate encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in PolarSSL 1.1.1. Affected is some unknown processing of the component DH Handler. The manipulation as part of a RSA Key leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A Security Bypass vulnerability exists in PolarSSL 0.99pre4 through 1.1.1 due to a weak encryption error when generating Diffie-Hellman values and RSA keys.

The bug was discovered 04/23/2012. The weakness was shared 12/06/2019 by Ruslan Yushchenko. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2130 since 04/04/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 542 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70486 (GLSA-201310-10 : PolarSSL: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70486). The entry VDB-61038 is related to this item.
