Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11.9 ELF File elf_core_dump memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function elf_core_dump of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The elf_core_dump function in binfmt_elf.c for Linux kernel 2.x.x to 2.2.27-rc2, 2.4.x to 2.4.31-pre1, and 2.6.x to 2.6.12-rc4 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via an ELF binary that, in certain conditions involving the create_elf_tables function, causes a negative length argument to pass a signed integer comparison, leading to a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 05/11/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2005 by Paul Starzetz with iSEC Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-1263 since 04/25/2005. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21828 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2005:472)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117946 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:472)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.11.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22620) and Tenable (21828). The entries 22621 and 23953 are pretty similar.
