A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.3/5.0 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Buffer overflow in HHOpen ActiveX control (hhopen.ocx) 1.0.0.1 for Internet Explorer 4.01 and 5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via long arguments to the OpenHelp method.
The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was presented 10/31/1999 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-1999-1577 since 04/21/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 943 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
