Feedgen up to 0.8.x XML xml entity expansion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Feedgen up to 0.8.x. Affected is an unknown part of the component XML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml entity expansion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-776. The product uses XML documents and allows their structure to be defined with a Document Type Definition (DTD), but it does not properly control the number of recursive definitions of entities. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Feedgen (python feedgen) before 0.9.0 is susceptible to XML Denial of Service attacks. The *feedgen* library allows supplying XML as content for some of the available fields. This XML will be parsed and integrated into the existing XML tree. During this process, feedgen is vulnerable to XML Denial of Service Attacks (e.g. XML Bomb). This becomes a concern in particular if feedgen is used to include content from untrused sources and if XML (including XHTML) is directly included instead of providing plain tex content only. This problem has been fixed in feedgen 0.9.0 which disallows XML entity expansion and external resources.

The weakness was disclosed 01/28/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-5227 since 01/02/2020. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

Upgrading to version 0.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
