Microsoft SQL Server before Windows 2000 SP4 allows local users to gain privileges as the SQL Server user by calling the xp_fileexist extended stored procedure with a named pipe as an argument instead of a normal file.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 07/04/2003 with Microsoft (Website). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0496 since 06/30/2003. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication.
