OpenStack Keystone up to 15.0.0/16.0.0 OAuth1 Access Token session expiration

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenStack Keystone up to 15.0.0/16.0.0 (Cloud Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component OAuth1 Access Token Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a session expiration vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-613. According to WASC, "Insufficient Session Expiration is when a web site permits an attacker to reuse old session credentials or session IDs for authorization." As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Keystone before 15.0.1, and 16.0.0. The list of roles provided for an OAuth1 access token is silently ignored. Thus, when an access token is used to request a keystone token, the keystone token contains every role assignment the creator had for the project. This results in the provided keystone token having more role assignments than the creator intended, possibly giving unintended escalated access.

The weakness was presented 05/07/2020. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-12690 since 05/06/2020. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 15.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
