Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x does not properly verify all contents of an SSL certificate if a connection is made to the server via an image or a frame, aka one of two different "SSL Certificate Validation" vulnerabilities.

The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was presented 06/05/2000 with Microsoft as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0518. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1161 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
