A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX 6.2/6.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file dmplay. Buffer overflow in dmplay in IRIX 6.2 and 6.3 allows local users to gain root privileges via a long command line option.
The issue has been introduced in 03/01/1996. The weakness was presented 08/02/2000 by Last Stage (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-0796. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 6.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
