IBM Secureway Directory up to 3.2.1 LDAP L memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Secureway Directory up to 3.2.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component LDAP. The manipulation of the argument L with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

IBM SecureWay 3.2.1 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code, via invalid encodings for the L field of a BER encoding, as demonstrated by the PROTOS LDAPv3 test suite.

The weakness was released 07/16/2001 with CERT as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-1310. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling .

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (6894). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 17005.
