Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 Embedded Content cross site scriting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown part of the component Embedded Content Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. An attacker might be able to inject arbitrary html and script code into the web site. This would alter the appearance and would make it possible to initiate further attacks against site visitors. CVE summarizes:

The HTML rendering engine in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via HTML in corrupted images and other files such as .GIF, JPG, and WAV, which is rendered as HTML when the user clicks on the link, even though the web server response and file extension indicate that it should be treated as a different file type.

The weakness was released 09/19/2005 by Sven Vetsch (Disenchant) with Redguard AG (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3312 since 10/26/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/08/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The exploit is shared for download at As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18269), Secunia (SA13317) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-11433). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 1010.
