A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function XMLHttpRequest
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Firefox before 1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite before 1.7.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an XBM image file that ends in a large number of spaces instead of the expected end tag.
The weakness was presented 09/23/2005 by Tim Altman and Yutaka Oiwa as MFSA2005-58 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2701 since 08/26/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19835 (RHEL 4 : firefox (RHSA-2005:785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115281 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Firefox and Mozilla Suite (Mozilla Foundation MFSA 2005-58)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
