Sun Solaris up to 8.0 LPD Service privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Sun Solaris up to 8.0 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component LPD Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The software does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

lpd daemon (in.lpd) in Solaris 8 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a job request with a crafted control file that is not properly handled when lpd invokes a mail program. NOTE: this might be the same vulnerability as CVE-2000-1220.

The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2001 by ron1n with Shell (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1583 since 09/23/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/10/2019). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published immediately after the advisory. It is declared as highly functional. It is possible to download the exploit at As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11513 (Solaris in.lpd Crafted Job Request Arbitrary Remote Command Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context remote.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3527. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3468.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7087), Vulnerability Center (SBV-1541), Tenable (11513) and Exploit-DB (1167). The entry 17901 is pretty similar.
