A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Sun Solaris up to 8.0 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component LPD Service. lpd daemon (in.lpd) in Solaris 8 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a job request with a crafted control file that is not properly handled when lpd invokes a mail program. NOTE: this might be the same vulnerability as CVE-2000-1220.
The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2001 by ron1n with Shell (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1583 since 09/23/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/06/2025).
