Sun Solaris 10 OpenSSL SSL_OP_MSIE_SSLV2_RSA_PADDING unknown vulnerability

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Sun Solaris 10 (Operating System). This affects the function SSL_OP_MSIE_SSLV2_RSA_PADDING of the component OpenSSL. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The SSL/TLS server implementation in OpenSSL 0.9.7 before 0.9.7h and 0.9.8 before 0.9.8a, when using the SSL_OP_MSIE_SSLV2_RSA_PADDING option, disables a verification step that is required for preventing protocol version rollback attacks, which allows remote attackers to force a client and server to use a weaker protocol than needed via a man-in-the-middle attack.

The bug was discovered 10/11/2005. The weakness was presented 10/13/2005 by Yutaka Oiwa with AIST (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2969 since 09/19/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20031 (GLSA-200510-11 : OpenSSL: SSL 2.0 protocol rollback), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185030 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02174)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35287) and Tenable (20031). Further details are available at openssl.org. See 1786, 1858, 1857 and 1861 for similar entries.
