A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in HP HP-UX 10.20/11.00/11.04/11.11/11.22 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown processing of the file csh/dtsession/dxsysinfo/imapd/inc/uucp/uux/rdist/deliver. The manipulation of the argument NLSPATH
as part of a Environment Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in HP Tru64 UNIX allow local and possibly remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long NLSPATH environment variable to (1) csh, (2) dtsession, (3) dxsysinfo, (4) imapd, (5) inc, (6) uucp, (7) uux, (8) rdist, or (9) deliver.
The weakness was presented 09/02/2002 with SNOSoft as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1604 since 03/25/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2018).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
