HP HP-UX 10.20/11.00/11.04/11.11/11.22 deliver NLSPATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
6.9$5k-$25k0.00

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in HP HP-UX 10.20/11.00/11.04/11.11/11.22 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown processing of the file csh/dtsession/dxsysinfo/imapd/inc/uucp/uux/rdist/deliver. The manipulation of the argument NLSPATH as part of a Environment Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in HP Tru64 UNIX allow local and possibly remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long NLSPATH environment variable to (1) csh, (2) dtsession, (3) dxsysinfo, (4) imapd, (5) inc, (6) uucp, (7) uux, (8) rdist, or (9) deliver.

The weakness was presented 09/02/2002 with SNOSoft as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1604 since 03/25/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2018).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (10016). See 18732, 18736, 18737 and 18739 for similar entries.
