A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP (Operating System) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component WMF/EMF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in the Graphics Rendering Engine (GDI32.DLL) in Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Windows Metafile (WMF) and Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format images that lead to heap-based buffer overflows, as demonstrated using MRBP16::bCheckRecord.
The bug was discovered 11/08/2005. The weakness was released 11/08/2005 by Peter Ferrie (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security as MS05-053 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2123 since 07/02/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 03/12/2021).
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2091 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20172 (MS05-053: Vulnerabilities in Graphics Rendering Engine Could Allow Code Execution (896424)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90284 (Graphics Rendering Engine Multiple Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS05-053)).
Applying the patch MS05-053 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3904.
