The legacy <script> data-island capability for XML in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary XML files, and portions of other files, via a URL whose "src" attribute redirects to a local file.

The weakness was presented 09/24/2002 as MS02-047 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0648. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
