Sun One Web Server 4.1 SP9/6.0 SP2 Search Engine NS-query-pat path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sun One Web Server 4.1 SP9/6.0 SP2 (Web Server). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Search Engine. The manipulation of the argument NS-query-pat with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in search engine for iPlanet web server 6.0 SP2 and 4.1 SP9, and Netscape Enterprise Server 3.6, when running on Windows platforms, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via ..\ (dot-dot backslash) sequences in the NS-query-pat parameter.

The weakness was released 10/04/2002 by rgod with Qualys as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1042. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11043 (iPlanet Search Engine search CGI Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1828.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9517) and Tenable (11043).
