The Sun Microsystems RPC library Services for Unix 3.0 Interix SD, as implemented on Microsoft Windows NT4, 2000, and XP, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (service hang) via malformed packet fragments, aka "Improper parameter size check leading to denial of service."

The weakness was disclosed 10/11/2002 by FIRST with Microsoft as MS02-057 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1140. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Applying the patch MS02-057 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (10258). The entry 19063 is pretty similar.
