A vulnerability was found in SquirrelMail 1.2.6/1.2.7/1.2.8/1.2.9/1.2.10 (Mail Client Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file read_body.php. The manipulation of the argument mailbox/passed_id with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in read_body.php for SquirrelMail 1.2.10, 1.2.9, and earlier allows remote attackers to insert script and HTML via the (1) mailbox and (2) passed_id parameters.

The weakness was presented 12/18/2002 with Yandex (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1341. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

By approaching the search of inurl:read_body.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15057 (Debian DSA-220-1 : squirrelmail - XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11239 (Multiple SquirrelMail Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1997.
