A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Oracle Database (Database Software) (affected version unknown). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Oracle Reports 6.0, 6i, 9i, and 10g allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via (1) "..", (2) Windows drive letter (C:), and (3) absolute path sequences in the desname parameter. NOTE: this issue was probably fixed by REP06 in CPU Jan 2006, in which case it overlaps CVE-2006-0289.
The bug was discovered 08/12/2003. The weakness was shared 01/18/2006 by Alexander Kornbrust with Oracle (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2371 since 07/26/2005. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 708 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3658.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (24321). The entries 1635, 1637, 1638 and 1636 are related to this item.
