A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 2.5.1/2.6/7.0/8.0/9.0 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function KCS_OPEN_PROFILE
of the component Kodak Color Management System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Sun Kodak Color Management System (KCMS) library service daemon (kcms_server) allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via the KCS_OPEN_PROFILE procedure.
The weakness was disclosed 02/07/2003 by echo as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0027. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12929 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68533 (KCMS Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2005. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3657.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11129) and Tenable (12929). The entry VDB-13747 is pretty similar.
