Eclipse Californium up to 2.7.2/3.5.0 DTLS Resumption amplification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Eclipse Californium up to 2.7.2/3.5.0. Affected is an unknown code block of the component DTLS Resumption Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a amplification vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-408. The product allows an entity to perform a legitimate but expensive operation before authentication or authorization has taken place. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In Eclipse Californium version 2.0.0 to 2.7.2 and 3.0.0-3.5.0 a DTLS resumption handshake falls back to a DTLS full handshake on a parameter mismatch without using a HelloVerifyRequest. Especially, if used with certificate based cipher suites, that results in message amplification (DDoS other peers) and high CPU load (DoS own peer). The misbehavior occurs only with DTLS_VERIFY_PEERS_ON_RESUMPTION_THRESHOLD values larger than 0.

The weakness was presented 07/29/2022. The advisory is shared for download at bugs.eclipse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-2576 since 07/29/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
