The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via / (slash) characters in the Type property of an Object tag in a web page.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was published 06/04/2003 by Drew Copley (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0344 since 05/28/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at msgs.securepoint.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1304 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10861 (MS02-005: MSIE 5.01 5.5 6.0 Cumulative Patch (890923)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100002 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS03-020)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3149. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2047.
