A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator up to 2.0 (Endpoint Management Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component MSDE Installer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The default installation of MSDE via McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 2.0 through 3.0 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a series of steps that (1) obtain the database administrator username and encrypted password in a configuration file from the ePO server using a certain request, (2) crack the password due to weak cryptography, and (3) use the password to pass commands through xp_cmdshell.
The weakness was shared 08/27/2003 by Andreas Junestam (Website). The advisory is shared at nai.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0148 since 03/17/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
