A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 95/97/2000/2002/2003 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component File Handler. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2000, 2002, and 2003, in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 and other packages, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed range, which could lead to memory corruption involving an argument to the msvcrt.memmove function, aka "Brand new Microsoft Excel Vulnerability," as originally placed for sale on eBay as item number 7203336538.

The bug was discovered 01/24/2006. The weakness was shared 03/14/2006 by Peter Winter-Smith with Microsoft as MS06-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-4131 since 12/09/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21078 (MS06-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (905413)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90303 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-012)).

Applying the patch MS06-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16059. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4237.
