Sun JVM/SDK up to 1.4.1_03 loadClass memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun JVM and SDK up to 1.4.1_03. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function loadClass. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The loadClass method of the sun.applet.AppletClassLoader class in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Sun SDK and JRE 1.4.1_03 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass sandbox restrictions and execute arbitrary code via a loaded class name that contains "/" (slash) instead of "." (dot) characters, which bypasses a call to the Security Manager s checkPackageAccess method.

The bug was discovered 10/21/2003. The weakness was presented 11/17/2003 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0896 since 10/24/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (13485). See 31921 for similar entry.
