The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was published 04/11/2006 by Golan Yosef, Stefano Meller and Mirko Gatto as MS06-014 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1185 since 03/13/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2346 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21210 (MS06-013: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (912812)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100034 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update Missing (MS06-013)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS06-014 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
