A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in LBL tcpdump up to 3.7 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function l2tp_avp_print
of the component L2TP Dissector. The manipulation of the argument length
with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The L2TP protocol parser in tcpdump 3.8.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and memory consumption) via a packet with invalid data to UDP port 1701, which causes l2tp_avp_print to use a bad length value when calling print_octets.
The weakness was disclosed 02/17/2004 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-1029 since 01/14/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15262 (Debian DSA-425-1 : tcpdump - multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (14046), Exploit-DB (23452), Tenable (15262), SecurityFocus (BID 9263†) and Secunia (SA10636†). The entries VDB-21574 and VDB-21576 are pretty similar.
