Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.21 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component NFS XDR Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer signedness error in the decode_fh function of nfs3xdr.c in Linux kernel before 2.4.21 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a negative size value within XDR data of an NFSv3 procedure call.
The bug was discovered 07/29/2003. The weakness was released 07/29/2003 by Jared Stanbrough as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0619 since 07/31/2003. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11813 (Linux 2.4 NFSv3 knfsd Malformed GETATTR Request Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 2.4.21 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12764), Exploit-DB (68), Tenable (11813), SecurityFocus (BID 8298†) and OSVDB (2353†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-15502. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
