Race condition in run_posix_cpu_timers in Linux kernel before 2.6.16.21 allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG_ON crash) by causing one CPU to attach a timer to a process that is exiting.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2006. The weakness was released 06/20/2006 by John Stultz with Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2445 since 05/18/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org.
