Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.1 SCTP xt_sctp Chunk denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SCTP xt_sctp Chunk Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in run_posix_cpu_timers in Linux kernel before 2.6.16.21 allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG_ON crash) by causing one CPU to attach a timer to a process that is exiting.

The bug was discovered 06/13/2006. The weakness was released 06/20/2006 by John Stultz with Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-2445 since 05/18/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22058 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165140 (SUSE Security Update for kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:042)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27380) and Tenable (22058). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2108, 2224, 2360 and 2476.
