Discourse is an open source discussion platform. Prior to version 3.0.6 of the `stable` branch and version 3.1.0.beta7 of the `beta` and `tests-passed` branches, a malicious user can edit a post in a topic and cause a DoS with a carefully crafted edit reason. The issue is patched in version 3.0.6 of the `stable` branch and version 3.1.0.beta7 of the `beta` and `tests-passed` branches. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2023 as GHSA-pjv6-47x6-mx7c. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-37906 since 07/10/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 3.0.6 or 3.1.0.beta7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dcc825bda505a344eda403a1b8733f30e784034a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
