The bug was discovered 06/09/2006. The weakness was released 07/10/2006 by Haifei Li with Fortinet Security Research as MS06-069 (Website). The advisory is shared at fortinet.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3587 since 07/13/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 31 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
