Netscape Navigator 7.0/7.0.2/7.1/7.2 authentication spoofing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Netscape Navigator 7.0/7.0.2/7.1/7.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Netscape 7.x to 7.2, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to spoof arbitrary web sites by injecting content from one window into a target window whose name is known but resides in a different domain, as demonstrated using a pop-up window on a trusted web site, aka the "window injection" vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2005 by Juha-Matti Laurio with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1160 since 12/08/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19083 (FreeBSD : web browsers -- window injection vulnerabilities (b0911985-6e2a-11d9-9557-000a95bc6fae)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18397), Tenable (19083), SecurityFocus (BID 11852†), OSVDB (59845†) and Secunia (SA13251†). The entries VDB-921, VDB-919, VDB-22660 and VDB-23720 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
